The Great Bubble Barrier is designed to stop the plastic soup from growing. The Plastic Soup is a huge environmental problem: sea turtles and fish get caught up in plastic waste, albatrosses and whales fill their bellies with bottle caps and plastic bags, ships are obstructed in their paths, and microplastics form a health hazard for the smallest to the largest organisms.
We believe that the plastic problem can only truly be solved when people start treating their environment with respect, and a lot less plastic packaging is produced. In the mean time, an average 8 million tons of plastic is added to our oceans every year, of which 80% is coming from land. The Great Bubble Barrier’s mission is to block as much plastic as we can and contribute to a cleaner and healthier oceans and rivers. The Great Bubble Barrier blocks plastic waste and provides a measurement tool to quantify the effectiveness of different types of policy and industry measures.
