The lake is only a few kilometers outside of the city center and was then and now the base for seaplanes. In any case, there was brisk flight activity at that time, as you can see.

The Anchorage International Inn, where the Austrian tourist group stayed, is now the Coast Inn at Lake Hood. The characteristic entrance area with the two columns, like large parts of the building, has apparently remained unchanged. At the end of the film you can see short shots of the tower at Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport and in the background the snow-capped peak of Denali, formerly Mount McKinley.

Tourists can enjoy free picnic air shows at Lake Hood then as they do now. Lake Hood and Lake Spenard, which were still connected by a canal in the 1970s, serve as runways for one of the busiest seaplane bases in the world. Approximately 200 aircraft use the base every day to transport goods and passengers between Anchorage and interior Alaska.

Anchorage is Alaska's largest city. It is located on the bay of Cook Inlet, which separates the Kenai Peninsula from mainland Alaska - and near the Chugach Mountains. The city covers an area of ​​5080 square kilometers and has a population of 300,000 - that's nearly half of all Alaska's residents. In 1977, when this film was made, there were around 170,000.

Anchorage was founded in 1915 as the headquarters of the Alaska Railroad. The name comes from the anchorage on Cook Inlet, where ships moored for supplies. On March 27, 1964, a severe earthquake caused death and great damage. The Good Friday quake is considered to be the most violent seismic activity ever recorded in the United States.

Unzählige Wasserflugzeuge, die auf dem Lake Hood nahe der Stadt Anchorage in Alaska starten und landen, zeigt uns dieser zauberhafte Film aus dem Jahr 1977. Der See liegt nur wenige Kilometer außerhalb des Stadtzentrums und diente damals wie heute als Basis für Wasserflugzeuge. Damals herrschte jedenfalls reger Flugbetrieb, wie schön zu sehen ist.

Das Anchorage International Inn, in dem die österreichische Touristengruppe abstieg, ist heute das Coast Inn at Lake Hood. Der charakteristische Eingangsbereich mit den zwei Säulen ist aber offenbar wie weite Teile des Gebäudes unverändert erhalten geblieben. Am Ende des Films sieht man kurze Aufnahmen vom Tower am Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport und im Hintergrund den schneebedeckten Gipfel des Denali, ehemals Mount McKinley.

Touristen können am Lake Hood damals wie auch heute kostenlose Flugshows bei einem Picknick genießen. Lake Hood und Lake Spenard, die in den 1970er-Jahren noch durch einen Kanal verbunden waren, dienen nämlich als Landebahnen für eine der verkehrsreichsten Wasserflugzeugbasen der Welt. Täglich nutzen ungefähr 200 Flugzeuge die Basis, um Waren und Passagiere zwischen Anchorage und dem Inneren Alaskas hin und her zu transportieren.

Anchorage ist die größte Stadt Alaskas. Sie liegt an der Bucht des Cook Inlet, welche die Kenai-Halbinsel vom Festland Alaskas trennt - und nahe der Chugach Mountains.
