Huge Jet Engine Dry Motoring | GE90-90B | Boeing 777
We replaced the engine igniters on this GE90-90B jet engine. Part of the replacement is to do a test to ensure that the new igniters will fire correctly. The igniter is the spark plug for a jet engine. It is used to lite the jet fuel to start the engine.
During the test I would be firing the igniter and needed to ensure that there is not fuel pooled in the burner cans which may catch on fire. So I do what is referred to as dry motoring to blow out any fuel that may be present before I fire the igniters.
The dry motor process is the same as the engine start process except that you do not add the fuel hence the dry part. The engines air powered starter motor will spin the turbine up to 35% during this procedure.
