Dreamers in Texas, here’s what we know about DACA right now.
Work permits are likely going away for DACA recipients with permanent addresses in Texas, but we don’t know exactly when. You’ll still have deferred action, which means protection from deportation, but we don’t yet know if Texas will continue to issue driver’s licenses to DACA recipients.
There’s no clear legal definition of a “permanent address” under immigration law. So if you live in Texas temporarily—like for school—but regularly return to another state and get mail there, that address may count on your DACA renewal. That could be a workaround.
Obviously, be very careful not to commit fraud. Only use an address if you truly spend time there and receive mail.
Here’s the good news: initial DACA applications will reopen in Texas. If you’ve never applied and you qualify, you may be able to apply soon!
