Composed in the mid-20th century, Waltz No. 2 is one of Shostakovich’s most widely recognized pieces, combining elegant dance form with an undercurrent of irony characteristic of his style. Originally conceived for orchestra, the work balances lyrical melody with a sense of formal distance.
