In this first look and review of the latest version of the photo editing software Luminar 4.2, I take a look at the overall performance and new additions. In particular the AI Sky Augmentation tool, and pose the question, does it have real world practical uses in a photo editing workflow. Also, is this the best photo editor for new photographers released in 2020?

Spoiler alert, but due to the heavy emphasis on making the computer do a lot of the hard work for you, the answer IMHO is yes.

I've been using Luminar within my workflow for some time now. I was in love with Luminar 3 and then felt that the first release of Luminar 4 showed great potential but unfortunately was let down by a lack of speed and a few software bugs. In this tutorial and review, I undertake a few edits to test whether the latest version of this AI-driven photo editor, Luminar 4.2, has come of age.

I have read that some people have experienced poor performance or software glitches in previous versions. Personally, since version 4.1 I've found the stability to be much improved, and, spoiler alert, but version 4.2 feels much quicker handling the files. Which is great.

If you don't know Luminar, due to its intuitive layout and slider-based approach, backed by some very clever AI software, it is a fantastic photo editor for new photographers beginning their photo editing journey. But for me, as a professional, although I wouldn't consider it as a complete solution for my demanding requirements, I do use it on a regular basis, either as a plugin for Lightroom or Photoshop, or to run filters and looks that either aren't possible in Photoshop, OR they're just a damn sight quicker to do in Luminar thanks to the AI engine.

In the four photos I edit I do three quick changes using the new AI sky augmentation tool, and then one more in-depth edit to show how I use some of my favourite other features.

A few final thoughts:

Thankfully, Luminar 4.2 runs quicker than previous releases. (on my system I've never really noticed any speed issues but I do have a pretty beefy PC - albeit 2 years old now!)
So far I haven't had any instability issues or noticed any bugs.
The new AI Sky Augmentation tool is good BUT has limited uses and you will need to expand your library of birds, clouds etc if you want to stop your photos ending up sharing similar elements!
There have been changes/improvements to the AI portrait tools but I didn't have time to test those yet.
It's worth the investment as the software is a one-off purchase not a recurring subscription like Adobe now do.
