Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction is currently the gold standard surgical treatment for ACL tears.Realisation of the limitations associated with ACL reconstruction has prompted renewed interest into other techniques which could improve outcomes after ACL rupture.ACL repair is a safe treatment option for acute ACL ruptures.
The results of ACL repair with internal bracing is a safe treatment option as an alternative to ACL reconstruction in acute proximal tears, with acceptable failure rates and satisfactory outcomes. This would have the potential benefits of retained native anatomy with proprioceptive fibres and negating the risk of donor site morbidity during graft harvest.
Final verdict should lie with the treating doctor as all injuries are different and patient specific plan should be opted.
