It's 10 years since Wikileaks published the Iraq War Logs, exposing horrific war crimes by the US. Now Julian Assange is languishing in Belmarsh prison fighting extradition to the US where he faces a potential jail term of 175 years for bringing this inconvenient truth to the attention of the world! So, what is the future for investigative journalism? This question has taken on particular significance in view of the UK government's plans to give immunity to war criminals and to authorise criminal conduct by the police and MI5 on the grounds of "national security...preventing or detecting crime...preventing disorder." Criminal conduct is also going to be allowed if it's deemed to be "in the interests of the economic wellbeing of the UK." An attempt to amend the bill explicitly excluding murder, rape and torture was voted down.
