In honor of Colorado Springs’ sesquicentennial anniversary, the CSPM unveiled a new exhibit, COS@150. This robust exploration of our community’s history and culture features 150 objects, illuminates 150 stories, commemorates 150 years. Throughout the commemoration year we invite you to explore these stories through a series of regional history lectures.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
In a 100 year span, it’s easy for events to be misremembered or more likely, in the case of the AdAmAn Club, embellished. Past President Don Sanborn, second female member Cindy Bowles and associate member Don Kallaus will review the myths and realities of the AdAmAn club. We will explore the myth of how the club was started vs the reality unearthed through research and with the help of the Pioneers Museum. We’ll also share a number of real or imagined stories from the verbal history of the club. Cindy will share the good, the bad and the ugly of climbing with a large group of men each year. We’ll wrap things up with a look to the future which will include the third summit house for the Club and plans for the 100th AdAmAn Centennial celebration.
ABOUT THE PRESENTERS
Don Sanborn
Don is a past President of the AdAmAn Club. He hails from a long line of embellishers and exaggerators active on Pikes Peak. His Grandfather and namesake, Don Lawrie, was President of the AdAmAn Club, founder and President of the Pikes Peak Ski Club, first Superintendent of the Pikes Peak Highway and the only person to ever drive completely off road to the summit of Pikes Peak (and that’s no exaggeration). Don has given a number of historical presentations over the years on topics related to Pikes Peak, including: the history of the Pikes Peak Hill Climb, the history of the AdAmAn club, the History of the Stewart/Carle family on Pikes Peak, the history of the summit structures on Pikes Peak and the history of Skiing on Pikes Peak.
Cindy Bowles
Cindy is the second female member of the AdAmAn Club, the club’s photographer and Chairman of the 100th Anniversary Book Committee. She is married to fellow AdAmAn member Chuck Bowles, but don’t hold that against her. She has the most climbs with the club among its female members and is a cherished and much appreciated climbing partner.
Don Kallaus
Don is an associate member of the AdAmAn Club who fed the club on the summit of Pikes Peak for twenty years. When not making high altitude green chili, Don has also published a number of local historical books. Don has written on local historical topics, been active in historical preservation with the Old Colorado City Historical Society and given multiple presentations on various local historical topics. When he was young, many, many years ago, Don worked for the Carle family in the Summit House on Pikes Peak.
