Judy Kaye performs Lily Garland's transformation number live on Broadway in 1978.
ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY is a madcap musical comedy with music by Cy Coleman, book and lyrics by Betty Comden & Adolph Green. It opened on Broadway early in 1978 and ran for 449 performances.
Kaye was the original understudy for Lily Garland and took over the role from the brilliant but erratic Madeline Kahn early on in the run. Though she didn’t originate the role she performed it for the bulk of the run and even appeared on the Tony telecast. Unfortunately little of her performance survives other than these recordings, some production photos and the short snippets included in the Tony performance.
