Five Months (Death Fled)

Revelation 9:5–6 fits the siege of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. with uncomfortable precision: “not to kill, but to torment” for a defined span while people are trapped in a collapsing city during the feast season. In this framework, the “five months” reads like the siege window, and the “scorpion” reads like prolonged, disabling misery carried out by the city’s rival warlords—factions inside Jerusalem who were permitted to terrorize, torture, and refuse mercy, turning the city into a living prison. The signature mark is exactly what the text says: men seek death and can’t find it—death flees while torment remains.

Josephus doesn’t describe this “torment” as something Rome did first and foremost—he describes rival powers inside the trapped city: violent factions, robbers, and warlords who preyed on their own people once Jerusalem was shut up for the Feast. He explicitly records victims begging their tormentors for a quick death—“despatch us”—and being refused, left to be consumed by famine (the cleanest match to “seek death… and shall not find it”). He also says many victims were not residents but were shut up in Jerusalem after coming for Unleavened Bread, which explains the scale and why so many were trapped when the circle closed. The commonly cited siege span runs roughly from mid-April to early September 70 A.D. (about five months). On scale: Josephus reports 1,100,000 perished and 97,000 carried captive (his numbers are debated), while Tacitus preserves a separate ancient figure of 600,000 in the besieged city.

Important note:
Scripture does NOT give a blanket promise that prophecies must have “duality” (a second future replay) after they’ve already been fulfilled clearly and historically. That assumption is an interpretive trick: it keeps people waiting for what already happened—and it conveniently protects the popular end-times industry which , by all counts, has raked in billions promoting the idea that "it's still just ahead."

And yes: this “always expect a future second fulfillment” habit is strongly associated with modern dispensational prophecy systems that spread widely through study-Bible notes—especially the Scofield Reference Bible tradition that shaped generations of prophecy reading. Read the text. Then read the record. Decide whether “fulfilled” is the word everyone’s been trained to avoid.
