This spring I have much less time to film wildlife than in previous years, but at least I can keep processing the archive footage that you haven't seen yet. And there is plenty to process...

I prefer looking for animals on my own, because it is the biggest joy for me. It's not a very efficient way of working, but otherwise I probably wouldn't enjoy filming. For some subjects, however, I have to make an exception, because tracking them down in the field is so demanding that I wouldn't do anything else the whole year. For example, filming wild owls falls into this category.

Fortunately, in my circle of friends there is an owl expert - ornithologist Ivo Hertl. Ivo does owl mapping on a professional level and I shamelessly exploit his hard-earned results from time to time.

One of our regular goals is a tiny owl that inhabits the remnants of coniferous forests in the highlands - the boreal owl. April is the best time to keep track of occupied cavities so that we have an idea of the number of breeding couples and we can protect them effectively in cooperation with foresters. I'm happy to join this work once in a while, because one never gets tired of seeing the pretty yellow-eyed faces.

This year it has been exactly 10 years since Ivo and I met and went into the field together for the first time. On the occasion of such an anniversary, I've assembled the footage of boreal owls that we've managed to film over the past few years, so that you can enjoy a look into their mesmerizing eyes. I would like to thank Ivo once again for everything he taught me about owls and drink to 10 more years of hunting together :-)
