A short documentary from Chinese television about Fuzhou Dongbei dagu (复州东北大鼓), a genre of traditional accompanied narrative singing (Chinese: shuochang, 说唱) from Wafangdian (瓦房店市), Dalian (大连市), southern Liaoning province (辽宁省), Northeast China. Filmed in August 2016.
The primary artist focused on in this video is master artist Chen Shifang (陈世芳), along with her sanxian accompanist Zhao Xuejin (赵学金). In addition to the sanxian (三弦, 3-stringed long-necked fretless lute with snakeskin-covered soundbox), the video also includes footage of other traditional instruments used in the region, including the shuangguan (双管, a wind instrument consisting of two cylindrical double-reed pipes of equal length) and sihu (四胡, vertical fiddle with four strings in double courses), as well as the local tradition of shadow puppetry (piyingxi, 皮影戏).
Wafangdian was named Fuzhou (复州) until 1913, when it was changed to Fu County (Fu Xian, 复县). In 1934 it was renamed Wafangdian Town (瓦房店镇), then in 1985 was renamed Wafangdian city (瓦房店市).
In 2006 Fuzhou Dongbei dagu, centering on Wafangdian (瓦房店市), Dalian (大连市), southern Liaoning province, was included in the First Batch of the Liaoning Province Province-Level Intangible Cultural Heritage List (辽宁省第一批省级非物质文化遗产名录).
Additionally, in 2007 Fuzhou Dongbei dagu, centering on Wafangdian (瓦房店市), Dalian (大连市), southern Liaoning province, was included in the First Batch of the Dalian Municipality Municipal-Level Intangible Cultural Heritage List (大连市第一批市级非物质文化遗产名录).
