Carentan was the key to linking Utah and Omaha Beaches. In June 1944, the 101st Airborne fought house-to-house and hedgerow-to-hedgerow against elite German paratroopers to take the town. Its capture secured the beachheads and prepared the way for the breakout from Normandy.
The Germans had placed an MG42 in the lower floor of the 'Cafe du Stade' (now Bar du Stade) and engaged Easy Company as they approached along Rue Auvers. The battle featured in Band of Brothers Episode 3: Carentan.
