I was living in Santa Monica and knew I wanted my next trip to be about more than just a vacation—I wanted to do something philanthropic. I applied and was accepted into a grassroots program called E.P.I.C. (Everyday People Initiating Change). Their mission is to bring clean water to villages in Tanzania, but to participate, I needed to raise $3,600 toward the cost of a water well.
That’s when I had a "wild hair" idea involving my old high school prom dress.
I reached out to my former classmates back home in Oak Harbor, Washington. I told my Whidbey Island reunion class: If we raise the money for these wells, I’m wearing the dress to our reunion. It was a "Gone with the Wind" style dress—massive, pink, with a huge white sash and long gloves.
We raised the first $1,500 before the reunion even started, and another $500 the night I showed up in that dress!
In this video:
• The "Wild Hair" Idea: How a bit of 80s nostalgia in Oak Harbor turned into life-changing water wells.
• Everyday People Initiating Change: Why I trusted this grassroots nonprofit and the impact of their work in Tanzania.
• The Power of the Team: I’m sharing photos of the bricks and the progress in Africa. I want everyone who contributed to see that they were there with me.
• The Big Reveal: Stick around until the very end to see the photo of me in the full "Gone with the Wind" prom dress at the reunion!
A Message to My Community:
When people say they wish they could go to Africa but can’t, I tell them: "You are already there with me." No one does this alone. Whether you contributed financially, shared the story, or provided encouragement, every role was necessary to make these water wells a reality. We are a team.

"This journey started with a wild idea in Santa Monica and a whole lot of heart from my classmates in Oak Harbor. E.P.I.C. (Everyday People Initiating Change) taught me that we don't need to be 'someone famous' to make a difference—we just need to be willing to try.
I want to hear from you: Have you ever had a 'wild hair' idea to help someone else? Or are any of my Whidbey Island friends here in the comments? Say hello below! 👇✨"
