Nearly five years after the Taliban took control of Kabul, a major diplomatic shift is happening in India. For the first time, a Taliban-appointed diplomat has arrived in New Delhi to lead the Afghanistan Embassy.
Who is the new diplomat?
The Official: The new chief is Mufti Noor Ahmad Noor, a senior official from the Taliban’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The Agreement: His arrival follows an agreement made during the visit of Taliban Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Mottaqi to Delhi in October 2025.
Background: Mufti Noor previously visited the Deoband madrassa in India and also held meetings in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
What changes at the Embassy?
The Flag: For now, the old tricolour flag (red, green, and black) of the previous democratic government will remain at the embassy.
The Staff: Current employees will also remain for the time being.
Future Uncertainty: Officials warn that things could change once the new Taliban appointee fully takes control next week.
India's Stance: India still does not officially recognize the Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan, as they took power by force. However, India has been improving ties, recently upgrading its mission to "Embassy status" to allow for diplomatic interaction.
Conclusion: This move places India among countries like China and Russia that allow Taliban diplomats. Watch the full video to understand the significance of this diplomatic update.
