Last week, Delhi-NCR witnessed a disturbing police crackdown targeting the families of laborers, with authorities branding them as "illegal Bangladeshis." Shockingly, hundreds were detained simply for speaking Bengali or being Muslim, despite possessing valid documents like Aadhaar cards, voter IDs, school certificates, and even passports. Reports detail harrowing accounts of beatings, harassment, and even the detention of an 8-month-old and an 18-month-old child in Loni.
Delhi-NCR is home to workers from West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, UP, and beyond; people who’ve built lives here. Why are they repeatedly scapegoated as "migrants"? Is this label just a pretext to justify harassment, or is there a deeper agenda of sowing division?
This isn’t isolated. Maharashtra saw violence against migrants for not speaking Marathi; Karnataka reignited "local vs. outsider" tensions; and in 2012, Northeastern laborers fled cities like Bangalore after targeted attacks. Now, Bihar’s electoral revision risks weaponizing the same rhetoric.
Globally, the ‘local vs. migrant’ narrative fuels xenophobia—from the U.S. deporting ‘aliens’ to green card holders being told to carry papers. Economics often ignores human stories, but politics and economics both shape human lives. What drives the political economy of migration? We unpack in #Cracknomics this week.
