In this video we look at the iron-carbon phase diagram of white cast iron (metastable system). While steels have a carbon content of less than 2.06%, the carbon concentration in cast iron is above this limit. Unlike steels, cast irons have a eutectic-based microstructure, which gives these materials excellent casting properties. The eutectic phase mixture of pearlite and cementite is called ledeburite. This video examines in detail the microstructure formation of eutectic, hypoeutectic and hypereutectic white cast iron.
