Hey everyone! In this video we’re going on a journey into the history of goth music – from gothic cathedrals and spooky novels to Bauhaus, The Cure, Siouxsie Sioux and the entire post-punk/goth rock scene.

We’ll trace where the word “gothic” really came from: medieval cathedrals, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and classic horror films like Nosferatu. All of that dark atmosphere set the stage long before guitars ever entered the picture.

Then we dive into the 1970s post-punk explosion – Bauhaus with Bela Lugosi’s Dead, Joy Division’s bleak anthems, Siouxsie’s witchy power, The Cure’s gloomy soundscapes, and The Sisters of Mercy’s cathedral-sized rock. We’ll also talk about the legendary Batcave club in London, where the goth scene found its first true home, and how goth spread to America through deathrock (Christian Death, 45 Grave) and eventually around the world.

This isn’t just about bands – it’s about the community, fashion, and spirit that have kept goth alive for more than 40 years. From fanzines and tape-trading to today’s festivals like Wave-Gotik-Treffen and Whitby Goth Weekend, goth remains one of the most enduring and creative subcultures.
