Turkey’s Syria policy wasn’t only about removing Assad or containing Kurdish autonomy—it also helped rewire the region’s ideological landscape. In this video, we examine how Ankara’s choices allegedly enabled a “jihadi highway” that empowered Salafi-jihadist ecosystems, normalized actors like Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), and helped replace secular Kurdish governance with a widening Sunni Islamist ascendancy from Idlib toward Damascus.
But the deeper story may be domestic. Since 2016, the Erdoğan administration has steadily squeezed out independent, moderate religious networks and replaced them with state-aligned youth foundations, patronage channels, and a loyalty-first religious bureaucracy. Taken together, this looks less like incidental “conservatism” and more like a governance design: religious hardening as regime survival.
