Traffic is hard to win and easy to lose.
Usually, we shouldn’t encourage our visitors to leave by giving them a lot of exit signs, but sometimes it makes sense.
We all have outbound links on our websites.
But not everyone tracks outbound link clicks.
That might be because by default, Google Analytics doesn’t track these clicks. In fact, by default, Google Analytics doesn’t track any non-pageview interactions. If it’s not a visitor moving from page to page, you need to set up events to track it.
This video shows you how to set up events using Google Tag Manager, to track all of the outbound link clicks on your website using Google Analytics.
In Tag Manager, we’re going to use a built-in variable, a tag and a trigger.
In Analytics, we’re going to use the Pages report in the Events section.
Once done, you’ll be able to track every click on every outbound link, including:
🔹 Clicks on links to conversions on other websites
🔹 Clicks on social media icon in your footer
🔹 Clicks on affiliate links (compare to your other tracking tools)
🔹 Clicks on outbound links in blog posts
🔹 Clicks on company names in testimonials
...wherever!
