The Regmi Research Series, a monumental collection of English translations of Nepali legal documents, is an invaluable resource for the social and and economic history of the kingdom, spanning more than two centuries.
There are numerous items relating to slavery, which was legal until the 1920s, and debt bondage, which continued until even more recent times. Unfortunately, the collection has little to say about these institutions among the ethnically Tibetan population of Nepal. Slaves with Tibetan names do appear in some documents, but there is no information about the route that led to their enslavement or the conditions in which they subsequently lived. There are, however, other sources to which we can turn for a fuller picture.
This presentation will examine a number of cases of enslavement and bondage in highland Nepal based on personal testimony, autobiographical literature and Tibetan legal documents that afford us a more three-dimensional perspective onto the lives of people who lost their freedom as a result of war, penury or other circumstances.
