Simon Fraser lived in Neidpath Castle near the town on Peebles, on the edge of the ancient Ettrick Forest.
He owned another castle nearby, Oliver Castle.
He was an active participant during the Scottish wars of Independence and fought on both English and Scottish sides.
Fraser was captured at the battle of Dunbar in 1296
Fraser fought for King Edward I in Flanders
Fraser co commanded a Scottish force that routed three divisions of English at the battle of Roslin in 1303
Fraser fought with William Wallace several times
Fraser joined the Bruce rebellion in 1306 and was captured shortly after the rout of Methven
Fraser was hung, drawn, and quartered and his head placed on a spike next to William Wallace’s on London Bridge
Fraser was known as ‘The Patriot’
