When Marge announces over breakfast that she's running for city council to fix Springfield's parks and common sense, Homer cheers with a celebratory donut — and promptly drops it. What starts as a well-meaning suburban campaign quickly spirals into slapstick and satire: Lisa composes a mournful sax ad, Bart rigs microphones and pranks politicians, and Homer’s lovable incompetence accidentally exposes decades of absurd zoning and donut subsidies. A misplaced ballot at the Kwik-E-Mart, a live-TV scandal smelted by Mayor Quimby, and a smear campaign funded by Mr. Burns turn the race into a full-blown town spectacle.
Town Hall devolves into carnival chaos — Chief Wiggum swallows evidence, Moe gives slurred campaign tips, and a puppet show aimed at mocking civic duty collapses in a spectacular electrocution/confetti disaster. Homer even signs a reform bill thinking it’s a coupon, unintentionally triggering real policy changes that confuse the bureaucracy and energize citizens. Through it all Marge wrestles with idealism vs. pragmatism, Lisa counsels ethics with a saxophone lament, and Bart’s prank reveals a hidden zoning memo that turns the tide.
In a heartfelt council showdown that doubles as courtroom, soap opera and carnival, Marge delivers a clear, passionate vision for Springfield. Homer redeems himself with earnest cleanup and community service, and the town unites to restore parks — capped, appropriately, by a donut-shaped bench in the newly refurbished square. Narrow victory, Maggie’s pacifier squeak, and a chorus of “D’oh!” bring the episode home: a comic ode to civic responsibility, messy redemption, and Springfield-style reform.
