#52 SKOOLIE BUS CONVERSION | Sheeting with Sheet Metal and Trimming with Wood

This is the 52nd video of our 2001 Thomas School Bus Tiny House Conversion.

Today the metal sheeting was surprisingly challenging. Here are some lessons that I learned while sheeting the outside with steel:

First, the black oxide drill bits from Master Mechanic have proven to be easy to break. They work great for wood, but break when attacking metal. Milwaukee has once again proven to be the best option for tools. Though they are always more expensive, they always seem to work better for me.

V helped by applying silicone to the back of the steel I had put in place. We will wait until tomorrow to put the pieces of rigid foam insulation in because we want the silicone to dry properly.

We used 1 1/2" in hex bolts to connect the 1.5" x 1.5" wood to the metal stripping that goes above the bus windows. This was a good process I think, but it required a whole lot of drilling. First we counter sunk the holes with a very large hole because we needed something big enough to get the hex driving drill bit inside our trim support. After that I used a 1/8" drill bit to clear the wood for the hex bolts. Once the wood was prepared, we put the wood up on the runners and drove the self driving bolts through the wood and into the metal.

Well... we tried. This didn't actually work very well. After the bolts left a nice imprint on the steel where they wanted to go, I used the 1/8" drill bit to help them out a little more.

Finally, we used the mahogany trim that I had table sawed, routed and sanded to finish the job. The video is here if you want to watch again:    • #51 SKOOLIE BUS CONVERSION | Carpentry, Me...  

The bus is ready for lights up there now. Also, we can use those cavities to run power. It's coming along but it's not easy.

OUR GOAL ➜ Our skoolie conversion is a modern twist on the tiny house movement. Living in an off grid tiny home will be a giant leap into full-time bus life and our very unique van life journey.
