Overhall Mill on the Kype Water at Sandford in Avondale was at first a corn mill and later a cotton followed by a cotton and calico printing works. It dates from at least 1801 and was abandoned by 1897. It had a large iron waterwheel fed from a dam above the falls. An auxillary oil or steam engine may have been installed for low water conditions. The mill has been mostly demolished and the wheel removed.
The unusual name is said to have arised from the sad tale of a local lad who was courting the miller's daughter when her father took against the lad and prevented the relationship from developing. The lad took revenge by leaving his spectacles on the thatched roof resulting on a sunny day to a fire that destroyed the corn mill. It isn't recorded what the fate of the young couple was.
