Ancient Trading Path Hike in the Winter Cheviots - Hunting for Radioactive Clues in the Pluton.

Описание: After the challenge of The Three U’s - looking for Uranium in the Cheviot Hills based on a 1975 paper - we find an even older paper by Dr. Haslam, the same author. Dating to 1970, the paper listed many places we didn’t even know were radioactive. But a list of new grid references detailing Uranium didn’t interest us this time, his whole new section on a different kind of radioactivity did.

The first of three parts, we begin our adventure in Upper Coquetdale at a popular hiking route near Barrowburn and Wedder Leap. Walking “The Street” - an ancient trading route dating back millennia - we hike from the River Coquet into the wintry climb of hills, valleys and aeons-old formations. Evocative names such as “The Slime” and “Swineside Law” tease a land full of history and lore.

Along the way we talk about geology, how the Cheviot Hills formed, how its volcanic past shaped the area and how its faint glow can still be detected today. We look at some rocks - andesite, the frozen remains of a once mighty lava flow - and learn how they are a clue to our ultimate goal. That goal? To find Dr. Haslam’s radioactive secrets hidden at our final destination - Carlcroft Burn.

In Part 2 we explore Carlcroft Burn, finding radioactivity in places we have never found it before. We find new radioactive elements, discuss the power of radioactivity and potential for a new source of renewable energy.
