Breast surgeon, Dr. Alastair Thompson, outlines the common symptoms of breast cancer, as well as the process for receiving a diagnosis. Symptoms – Symptoms are not always obvious (such as a lump). Other symptoms can include discomfort, unease, nipple discharge, change in breast shape, or otherwise anything that seems unusual for the patient’s usual breast. Diagnosis – Your doctor will take your full medical history and do a careful examination of the area. Based on your examination, your doctor will then work with a team of specialists to conduct a mammogram, x-ray, MRI, and/or collect a tissue sample. Treatment – You will meet with a specialist to discuss your treatment options based on your diagnosis. This can include a variety of drug treatment, radiation, or surgical options. At Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, our approach is to look for the best long-term success outcome. The most common breast cancer procedures are a lumpectomy or mastectomy. Your breast cancer treatment plan will depend on a variety of factors, including your specific diagnosis and personal preferences.
