The New York Times Book of Wine goes a long way toward filling the gap. Handsomely edited, with full-length essays by the usual suspects - Eric Asimov and Frank J. Prial in particular - this worthy tome joins a pantheon of literature on the subject on equal terms from the start.
560 pages strong - there was, after all, a surfeit of riches for Howard Goldberg to choose from - and perhaps rather more contemporary than historic, this splendid and varied work is nonetheless likely to remain in print for a very long time.
A dabbler's delight. And how nice to see an article on "Vintage Madeira's Enduring Charms" - a sadly overlooked libation, if ever there was one...
