Members of the Irish Army, the Old IRA, the Civil Defence, marching bands and sporting organisations took part in a ceremony to mark the 50th anniversary of the Easter Rising in Monaghan town.
The highlight of the event was a military ceremony held in Church Square. Members of the Old IRA formed a guard of honour which was inspected by Commandant John J. Fitzpatrick. The secretary of the County Commemoration Committee Sean O’Murchadha read the proclamation and Brenda Quigley the Monaghan Agricultural Officer gave a brief oration.
The tricolour was lowered to half mast in memory of those who had died during Easter Week 1916. Barney McCabe played the bugle as the flag was raised again. The parade featuring pipe, accordion and marching bands passed before the reviewing stand. Ernest Blythe and Erskine Childers were among the dignitaries who attended.
