Canada’s Transportation Minister Omar Alghabra on Tuesday announced plans for a high-frequency rail line between Toronto and Quebec City, which he estimated could cut travel times between the two cities by up to ninety minutes.
The minister said Via Rail and the Canada Infrastructure Bank would begin consultation with First Nation communities this summer, which would be followed by an impact assessment. He said he expects the project will be completed by 2030.
Alghabra added that Canada had looked into high-speed rail, but determined it would cost “significantly more” and would take “a lot more time to build.”
He said the rail service would be ninety per cent electric, giving Canadians a “greener” option for travel.
