GMAT Quant: Focus on DIGITS vs. Decimals

Avoid unnecessary calculation! Here's a quick tip for you: when your answer choices are listed, remember that you often don't need to calculate using specific decimal places.

Whether you multiply or divide by decimal numbers, the power of ten (the order) will change, but the digits in the number will be the same. That is, 0.84, 8.4, 84, and 840 all have the same digits, but a different power of ten.

When all of the answer choices are on the same order (that is, roughly the same power of ten), it doesn't make sense to worry about the decimal. Just focus on the digits instead!

In certain situations, you'll get answers where the digits are all the same. In that case--surprise, surprise!--you can largely ignore the digits and focus on the power of ten.

What you're unlikely to see is situations where you have to focus on the digits and the decimals both at the same time.

Remember, part of performing well on the GMAT is learning how to do LESS WORK, but doing less work responsibly. It's not just cutting corners, but knowing how to CUT CORNERS RESPONSIBLY.
