Gun violence has received a lot of attention recently, but like so many other stories in our news media, the prevailing narratives surrounding firearms are founded on a lot of false information.
So let's start with the myth that more guns lead to more deaths.
Here are some details. While gun ownership in the United States is at an all-time high, violent crime is almost at an all-time low.
According to the Congressional Research Service, there was 56 percent more privately held weapons in 2013 than there were in 1993.
During this time, around 175 million new weapons were acquired by Americans.
However, during the same period, the US homicide rate decreased by more than 50%.
Therefore, there has been a 56% increase in guns while there has been a 50% drop in murders and homicides involving guns.
In fact, you will frequently find an inverse association between homicide rates and gun ownership if you look at some of the crime statistics in our country's gun-friendliest states.
For instance, North Dakota and Idaho, two of the safest states, have some of the highest rates of gun ownership.
Washington, DC, the nation's capital, has more homicides per 100,000 people than any other state in the US despite having some of the tightest gun laws in the country.
Cities like Chicago, Philadelphia, and Baltimore, which have the strictest gun prohibitions in the country but also have greater homicide rates than almost any other city in the country, exhibit a similar trend.
Unfortunately, these cities, which are unsurprisingly managed by district attorneys who are lenient toward crime, continue to set new records for the number of annual recorded homicides even though the country's homicide rate has been slashed in half.
