Hi, I’m Bill Robinson and I am here to talk about Diatomaceous Earth, Harris has several products using Diatomaceous Earth for killing bed bugs.

I’m going to review with you how t o best use the powder, including key areas for application, safety tips and using this product with other common types of bed bug killers in the Harris Product Line.

Make sure to always read the label and follow the directions.

Before using this powder or any other insecticide for bed bugs you need to remove clutter for the infested areas.

Remove all bedding and furniture covers and wash and dry in high heat.

Remove the boxspring and mattress from the bed and vacuum thoroughly., for more on these steps watch our videos on how to completely eliminate bed bugs.

Now let's focus on how to apply Diatomaceous Earth, if you are using liquid spray as part of your treatment which we would recommend, you’ll want to make sure you apply this powder after the spray has completely dried.

The powder must remain completely dry to remain effective. Diatomaceous Earth is a natural product and is a desiccant, it kills bed bugs by breaking down the outer skin of the bed bugs and causing dehydration this a mechanical action as opposed to a chemical reaction, meaning that the bed bugs die after they come in contact with the powder rather than ingesting the chemical.

The powder will take up to 72 hours to kill a bed bug after the initial contact, so be patient and know that diatomaceous earth is not an immediate kill.

When applying coat a thin layer of of powder in areas such as mattresses baseboards and behind electrical outlets. For a full list of approved areas of application see the product label.

Again Make sure not to over apply, a lite dusting is all that is needed to kill bed bugs.

Harris Diatomaceous Earth comes in three sizes, 8 ounce puffer bottle, a two pound bag and a 4 lb bag. The 2 and 4 lb sizes include a powder duster which provides a few benefits over the 8 ounce puffer bottle when applying.

The puffer with extension nozzle allows you to go deep into cracks and crevices and wall voids.

Finally here are some of the most commonly asked questions that we receive about these products:

First is this product effective against resistant bed bugs and the answer is yes, DIatomaceous Earth as mentioned earlier works through mechanical action and will kill bed bugs that have a resistance to a traditional pyrethroid insecticide.

Second: How long does it take to kill bed bugs?

The powder can take up to 72 hours to kill bed bugs after the initial contact, but it may work sooner, Just be patient her as it make take time for the bugs to make contact with the powder you have applied.

Third Question: How long is the residual and how often do you have to reapply?
