P0420 is a code dealing with the catalytic converter. (Federally required due to vehicle emissions.) If the efficiency of the converter goes below a certain threshold it triggers the check engine light along with P0420.

A common symptom for a failing or bad catalytic converter is engine stalling. Before you run out and spend quite a bit of money replacing the converter, check for gas leaks between the cylinder head and exhaust pipe; between the exhaust pipe and catalytic converter and possible a loose front and/or rear oxygen sensor.
