USS South Dakota (BB-57)

Rushed into action in 1942, she fought through Guadalcanal, surviving power failures and dozens of enemy hits in one of the Pacific War’s most chaotic night battles.
Repaired and returned stronger, South Dakota became a vital shield for U.S. carrier forces, defending them with intense anti-aircraft fire across the Gilberts, Marshalls, Marianas, Philippines, and finally Iwo Jima and Okinawa. She even bombarded Japan itself before the war ended.
Scrapped in 1962, South Dakota left no museum behind—but her legacy lives on as one of the hardest-hit, hardest-fighting American battleships of World War II.
