Reflect on Sunday’s Mass readings each week through The Word Exposed with Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, pro-prefect for the Dicastery for Evangelization.

We are on the Second Sunday of Advent; and today’s gospel reading presents John the Baptist, who preached and baptized for repentance. Such was his way of preparing the way of the one mightier than him, who will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire.

The gospel says that at the time, “Jerusalem, all Judea, and the whole region around the Jordan,” sought John for baptism as “they acknowledge[d] their sins.” As John preached in the desert, the people were going out to him, opening themselves to conversion and receiving baptism.

John also warned the Pharisees and Sadducees who came for baptism: “Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance.” Clearly, brothers and sisters, repentance, conversion, and baptism go beyond mere observance of a ritual. Genuine change must be seen in the way we conduct ourselves and relate with one another. That, to John, is the most fitting preparation for the coming of Jesus, the Lamb of God, the mightier one.
