Why Utilitarian Morality Always Turns Against Us

I had a beloved dog. He wasn’t too old, but he grew very ill. We went to the veterinarian often - she was skilled, compassionate, a true humanist. Everything went well, until one day she told us it was time to put him down. I refused. From that moment, the atmosphere changed. The same procedures that were painless before became strangely painful. She believed she was a hero, inflicting suffering to push me toward what she thought was the greater good.

It dawned on me then: this is utilitarianism. This thinking that the ends will always justify the means, that hurt is permissible if you believe it will advance an ultimate goal. But is that wisdom?

The Christian vision of morality tells a different story. It sets limits: you may not do evil that good may come. Even the simplest guiding question - “What would Jesus do?” - has more truth, depth, and compassion than any abstract formula about maximizing happiness.
