LUH designed for armed role
Besides the reconnaissance role, the LUH can also be used for light attack role. HAL is having designed the helicopter with two configurations armed and unarmed role. This can be understood from the display used in the LUH. LUH has a glass cockpit configuration called Smart Cockpit Display System (SCDS) which is equipped with 3 Smart Multi-Function Displays (SMFD). These SMFD will have aspect ratio of 4:3 (Horizontal x Vertical) and resolution is 1024 X 768. The three displays will be connected to the Electro optical sensors of the helicopter. The EO sensors onboard can be controlled by the pilots with the help of Smart MFD.
In the non-weaponised configuration, one of the SMFDs will be configured as Bus Controller (BC) and other two as Remote Terminals. In the weaponised configuration, a separate mission computer would integrate to act as a bus controller. The present design has option to integrate the ATGM with LUH which will be integrated with the Electro optical sensors and Smart MFD.
The heart and the soul of the helicopter is going to be its Electro Optical sensors. Be it recon, transport or armed mission, the electro optical sensor data would be vital for LUH for its effective operation. The proposed EO system in the turret of LUH are IR Camera/FLIR, IR Camera/FLIR, Eye safe Laser Range Finder, Laser Designator, Short Wavelength IR & Low light camera.
The videos captured from EO sensors will be displayed on the SMFD and a additional signal may be required for weaponized role.
The EO/IR sensors to be integrated with LUH will provide it Day and night observation capabilities to search, detect, acquire, recognize and identify targets. For armed role it will aid in aiming and designation of targets as well as the measurement of range of the targets and Automatic target tracking.
This a smart design approach by HAL where it has designed LUH considering it can be weaponized in future with ATGM and other ammunition if needed.
Now, lets also quickly look into the delivery timeline of the 12 LUH ordered for army and air force.
HAL LUH Development Progress
The production of LUH has already begun this financial year and the armed forces are expected to get 4 LUH this financial year and the remaining 8 in next financial year. As per latest reports, 2 LUH are in advance stage of production. Once the order for 12 LUH will complete, a much bigger order of LUH is expected.
The limited series production (LSP) will be completed from Bengaluru, however the mass production of the LUH will happen at new helicopter manufacturing complex at Tumakur. It will have the capacity to produce helicopters of 3 ton to 12-ton category. The Tumakur assembly line will be able to produce 60 helicopters per year from 2023 onwards. It is expected to be fully operational from March 2022.
The defence ministry also needs to clear Acceptance of Necessity for 175 more LUHs which has been pending for quite a long time. Without sufficient order in time, the HAL’s capacities would run idle, and production would see delay due to non-availability of critical items.
HAL LUH
Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) is a single engine, multi-role light weight helicopter in the 3-tonne class featuring state of art technologies.
LUH has pilot and co-pilot in side-by-side configuration. The roles to be performed by LUH include Armed Reconnaissance, Aerial photography, Scout Role in conjunction with attack helicopters, troop transport for military version and commuter role for civil version. It can transport 6 personnel besides pilot and co-pilot. The chopper is capable of carrying cargoes of up to 1 tonne under-slung. It gives a range of 350km with 500kg payload and total ferry range of 500km. It has a service ceiling of 6.5km. The helicopter has already proven capability at high altitudes of Himalayas during numerous trials.
