Airplane tires are some of the strongest tires ever engineered. A single aircraft tire can support over 40,000 pounds, survive instant acceleration to 155 mph, and withstand extreme heat during landing.
That black smoke you see when a plane touches the runway comes from intense friction as the tires go from zero to full speed in a split second. While a normal tire would explode, aircraft tires are designed to survive 200–300 landings at temperatures up to 400°F.
This incredible strength comes at a cost—each aircraft tire can cost around $7,000, and large planes like the Airbus A380 use 22 tires, pushing total tire costs past $100,000.
