This is a short film made by photo journalist Jeremy Hunter in the early 1960s. What follows is what he said about his first film which then led to a long and fascinating career:
I was a teenager during the 1960s and after leaving drama school where I’d taken a course in production, my ambition was to enter the film and television industry. It was very difficult to enter then as it was governed by a “closed shop” union, the ACTT. Research indicated that perhaps the best way to demonstrate my passion for the industry was to make my own film.
I’d seen in a bookshop a copy of a recently published title: "The London Nobody Knows” by the artist Geoffrey Fletcher who had an encyclopaedic knowledge of some of the city’s most obscure and unknown areas. I spent the next months cycling throughout London visiting these and ended up finally in Fournier Street, a microcosm of the East End of London. At the bottom end of the street there’s a park within which Spitalfields Church lies. In the 1960s the locals called it “Itchy Park” because they described everyone in it to be “verminous”. I hired a 16mm camera, a UHER tape-recorder, and started filming.
The subject of my film - the homeless and disadvantaged - is as relevant today as it was sixty years ago.
