But under Buttigieg’s leadership, new buildings went up, parks were renovated and downtown South Bend was revitalized. Known for being a Rhodes scholar and an Afghanistan war veteran, ‘Mayor Pete’ rode a wave of enthusiasm after announcing his presidential run. But in June, after a black resident was shot and killed by a white police officer, Buttigieg drew swift criticism, and the underlying frustrations of African Americans in South Bend were thrust into the national spotlight. To earn the Democratic nomination, Buttigieg will need to broaden his reach and connect with black voters.
