Описание:
A massive skeleton rises from the darkness of an abandoned palace.
Terrified warriors draw their swords.
And behind the scene stands a mysterious sorceress.
This unforgettable image comes from one of the most dramatic works of Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblock printing: Takiyasha the Witch and the Skeleton Spectre by the artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi.
But the story behind this print is far stranger than it first appears.
In this episode of Season of Silence, we explore the dark legend of Taira no Masakado, a rebellious samurai who challenged imperial authority nearly a thousand years ago. After his death, stories spread that his daughter Takiyasha mastered forbidden sorcery and summoned a gigantic skeleton spirit to destroy the warriors who hunted her.
Kuniyoshi transformed this legend into one of the most famous supernatural images in Japanese art.
Yet the skeleton may represent something deeper than a monster.
It may symbolize the ghost of rebellion itself—an ancient warning about power, memory, and the fear that the past never truly disappears.
Through this haunting artwork, we uncover how Edo-period ghost stories shaped the imagination of a city and how a single image can preserve the anxieties of an entire society.
Sometimes history does not shout.
Sometimes it waits quietly in the shadows of a print.
