Jonathan Brown in his book "Tristan und Isolde on Record" writes:
"The 1976 Bayreuth recording is the "non plus ultra" of Carlos Kleiber live performances. It is one of the rare recordings of a uniformly seasoned and first-rate cast and orchestra, inspired by a visionary conductor. The spacious sound of the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra is present in bountiful quantities. Under the spell of Kleiber, and ignited by his baton, the orchestra is a always a full and powerful player in the drama being worked out on stage.
In the opening scene, Heinz Zednik, the young sailor, sings beautifully from the mast above, as if he were part of the wind. Catarina Ligendza is at her peak as Isolde, still best at her upper register, but able to project effectively at the lower end as, for example, she mulls over her destiny ("Mir erkören, mir verloren")—when she sounds as if she is crouched, ready to spring into action against Tristan—or when she expresses anguish at seeing Tristan every day and yet being unloved by him ("wie könnt' ich die Qual bestehen!"). Yvonne Minton is a persistent and solicitous Brangäne, and Donald McIntyre a tough and redoubtable Kurwenal. Spas Wenkoff is a rich baritonal "heldentenor", who presents a strong and noble Tristan, yet not beyond being shamed by Isolde to drink. And once they have drunk, Kleiber transports them miraculously to another, deeper realm."
