Here's some video game tuneage.
About the piece: Corridors of Time is a composition that originates from the Square Enix video game “Chrono Trigger” released in 1995 on the Super Nintendo. Known for it’s relaxing and ethereal nature, the piece has become one of the standards for what is considered the “Real Book” of video game music. With the idea of converting this to a semi-jazz piece, I took some minor reference to the Duke Ellington piece “Half the Fun” for part of the drumset’s performance. With a laid back beat set in the toms in some sections, I was (hopefully) able to mimic the relaxed nature that Ellington was able to create for his piece. I also referenced the video game piece the “Ballad of the Windfish” from the Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening in the Alto’s solo. Both ideas fit so well into the piece that I couldn’t not include them. As always, I don’t own the rights to this piece as I am just another fan putting their spin on the song. The rights for “Corridors of Time” rest with Square Enix.

Artist’s Note: I've been arranging some video game tracks for a couple of years now and have been contemplating on and off about starting recording this one. However, it was very stop-and-go over the past year as I’d start filming it and then give up halfway through. I’d be comparing the quality of my recording to other artists doing the same thing and just think about the time and effort (for both the editing and the playing ability) that would have to go into it to get it to a similar quality. So I’d take a break from doing it and start back where I was a couple of months later to repeat the process.
Early this year, I stumbled across an artist known as Ginger Root. I’m certain a lot of people were getting recommend his song “Loretta” as the YouTube Algorithm be algorithming. One of the albums of his that I really got into was the Toaster Music Collection, where the dude would just go out in his car and record music in a single session. I was awed at his ability of just roll out somewhere to record some tuneage and call it a day; Classic Nike “Just Do It” mentality. So as I was laying in bed on a Labor Day weekend morning, I decided that I was just gonna record and edit the whole damn thing that day and what it is, it is. And so I did.
Of course, I couldn’t fight my scope and just have it be an easy one-and-done session. I of course went through the process of recording each instrument 3-5 times, setting up lights, moving sets, begin editing it, re-record the saxes because they were peeking on the mic, continue editing, quit at midnight, pick it up again in the morning, re-edit the audio in garage band cause I still didn’t like the sound of the saxes, get about 65% done with the edit, take a break at the county fair for 3 hours, come back to finish the edit, work until midnight even though I have to be up by 6:30-7 to get ready for work the next day, get the final push and export at like 12:15, upload to YouTube, go to work the next day, realize some of the video isn’t lined up with the sound, hyperfocus on that in the background while doing my job all day, get home, privatize the other video to maintain the view count, fix the edit, then relay all of this to you (The Viewer) to point out that none of this project done on a whim was easy, but it was certainly fun to make!
So, to you potential people who are interested in taking on a personal project but can’t get started or reach the finish line: Just commit to trying to make it in a day and keep the mentality of “It doesn’t have to be perfect, I just have to get it done”. It’ll be a lot of work, but it’ll be worthwhile creating a project for fun where you can stretch your skills and even try out some new things. I can certainly tell you that there are a lot of things in making this video that I didn’t know how to do before; so for that I am grateful.
With all of that, I certainly hope that you enjoy this arrangement for what it is. If not, that's alright too. There are plenty of different versions by other talented artists that have their own take on this piece, I'm just happy to be a drop in the sea.
