Everyone wants to be a little lighter on the scales, right?
Generally, that’s why we all start our fitness journey. That goal of dropping X-amount of kg`s as fast as possible is usually what drives us to join the gym.But what is the difference between fat loss and weight loss and what should we be aiming to achieve?
Fat loss and weight loss are 2 different things and knowing the difference can be crucial to keeping your sanity while trying to track your progress.
Fat loss is burning of excess body fat while maintaining muscle mass.
Weight loss is loss of body composition, loss of muscle mass, loss of water, loss of body fat.
Fat loss is what we should be aiming for. Weight loss is easy, don’t eat, don’t drink. But that is obviously not a healthy option. Again, don’t worry about your weight.
Successful weigh loss should be measured by tracking your body composition. Measuring body fat percentage, muscle mass, how you feel, how your clothes fit, energy levels. Scales will not tell you this, they will not tell you that you look better and they won`t tell you that your body composition has improved. A number on a scale is not an indicator of your overall physical health.
If our goal is fat loss then, we need to focus on preserving muscle mass. We need to eat. We need to feed our muscles. People will tend to sabotage their nutrition and food intake, in which they eat too little, resulting in muscle loss. From there, losing fat becomes even more difficult.
Don’t worry about your weight. Worry about being healthy.
Tips to prevent muscle loss.
Consume enough calories to match your body size and activity.
Consume enough protein rich foods.
Consume enough carbohydrates to support your activity levels.
Exercise, give your muscles a reason to grow and maintain themselves.
Recovery. Make sure you get adequate sleep. Very Important!
