Today we explore an abandoned mill that opened its doors in 1921, specialising in the production of cigarette paper and employing over 1000 people at it’s height.

It’s stunning location was chosen purposely so that it could take advantage of the water running down from the steep hills that surround it. The mill had began making a loss by 1986, they continued up until 2001 when they made a sudden decision to close overnight, leaving the mill in a ‘time capsule’ like state.

The decaying site feels like something from a post apocalyptic world, nature has well and truly found its way inside, it’s vast machinery still holding the streams of paper from its last use, everything remains as it did the day it closed.

Its incredible to imagine the vast room in action, the constant echo of water, machinery and workers would have been deafening. Working inside a mill could not have been an easy job.

The lesser seen parts of the mill have an eerie feel to them now in their abandoned state, small corridors leading to dark rooms which are like an obstacle course to navigate through, its hard to imagine having to work down here for hours on end.

Finished products remain in situ, as if someone walked out in the middle of a job…
its strange to think a whole community of workers packed up one day and never returned, the sad truth behind so many of these industrial bygones that changed the landscape and infrastructure of Britain forever.
