AFHEA + FHEA QUICK START GUIDE || Teaching Assistant Tips [updated 2023]

The Arena Fellowship (aka HEA Fellowship, AdvanceHE Fellowship) scheme at UCL was reaccredited in autumn 2024 to use the new Professional Standards Framework (PSF) 2023. The previous scheme was accredited under the PSF 2011.

During the autumn term there is a transition period where applications under the old scheme can be accepted for the submission point of 2nd December 2024. Thereafter, we can only accept applications for the new scheme. This document is irrelevant to you, if you are applying in December 2024. Some of the resources in ALP have not been updated, and this document provides a commentary to clarify what to look for if you apply from 2025 onwards, under the new scheme. Finally, the relevant tab on the Arena Fellowship Moodle (self-enrolment) has resources and the new (slightly altered) application form.

The Application Form has a new ‘context statement’ in section 1 where you briefly describe the context you work in (ie department size, number of students, overall culture of department and discipline, and so on. This does not need to be mapped to the Professional Standards Framework). Case studies are now 900 words.

The PSF descriptor has been updated, and is listed in the UCL Arena Moodle page. Descriptors describe the ‘level’ of experience and practice. Descriptor 2 is the same as ‘Fellowship’ (FHEA). There is an emphasis on ‘effective and inclusive’ teaching. The new ones are simpler than the 2011 ones:
Descriptor 2 is suitable for individuals whose practice with learners has breadth and depth, enabling them to evidence all Dimensions.
Effectiveness of practice in teaching and/or support of high quality learning is demonstrated through evidence of: D2.1: use of all five Professional Values // D2.2: application of all five forms of Core Knowledge // D2.3: effective and inclusive practice in all five Areas of Activity
K1 (subject knowledge) is now assumed // V5 (collaboration) is new
