After 40 years, my mom finally gave me back my original 1983 Crossbows & Catapults. Every piece survived. Every memory came flooding back.
This wasn't just any board game. You built castles, loaded catapults and crossbows, and watched your opponent's fortress collapse in real time. No dice. No cards. Just pure tactical destruction.
Released by Lakeside in 1983, Crossbows & Catapults was a tactical battle game where players built fortress walls, positioned soldiers, and used spring-loaded weapons to knock down their opponent's castle. Unlike most board games of the era, this one had real physical projectiles and actual consequences—when something fell, it stayed down.
In 1983, less than 10% of homes had VCRs and video games weren't in every living room. Board games were how kids spent rainy days, winter evenings, and time with friends. Crossbows & Catapults stood out because it combined strategy, luck, and satisfying destruction in a way no other game did.
In this video, I open the box, set up the battlefield on the same kitchen table we played on as kids, and explore why this game meant so much—not just to me, but to an entire generation that grew up before screens took over.
If you remember rainy afternoons, board game battles, and the feeling that something simple could be everything, this one's for you.
