William Westmoreland was the US military commander in South Vietnam from 1964 until 1968. He has been criticised by some historians for his handling of the conflict in Vietnam.
As a young officer Westmoreland was in the Artillery and saw action in WWII as well as Korea. During his career he was awarded numerous US and foreign military decorations.
Sources include The Battle of Long Tan (Peter Fitzsimons) and Westmoreland: The General Who Lost Vietnam (Lewis Sorley), US National Archives. In addition to other awards he received the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and Vietnam Service Medal.
